What is Runtime Security?

Runtime security protects systems while software is executing, when real behavior, context and consequences become visible.

01

Runtime security defined

Runtime security is the practice of observing and protecting systems during execution. It focuses on actual behavior in a live environment rather than relying only on what source code, configuration or pre-deployment testing predicts.

The runtime layer may include workloads, processes, applications, containers, endpoints and the actions those systems perform.

02

Why protection during execution matters

Many relevant conditions exist only at runtime: current inputs, active identities, environment state, network destinations and the sequence of operations that led to an event. Controls operating during execution can evaluate this context closer to the point of consequence.

03

Visibility and monitoring

Runtime visibility captures meaningful activity such as process behavior, resource access and security-relevant events. Monitoring uses that visibility to identify policy violations, anomalous behavior and changes requiring investigation.

Useful telemetry should clearly identify what happened, when it happened, the relevant context and the observed outcome.

04

Policy enforcement, detection and response

Runtime controls can detect unwanted behavior, enforce defined policy or support a response after an event. The right mode depends on technical placement, confidence, operational risk and the consequence of blocking legitimate activity.

05

How runtime controls complement prevention

Secure development, code review, vulnerability management, identity, access and configuration controls reduce risk before execution. Runtime security does not replace them. It addresses behavior and context that become concrete only while the system is running.

06

Runtime security for AI agents

Agentic systems add a specific runtime question: What is the agent about to do? An agent may translate model output into a command, tool invocation, package operation or service request. Security therefore needs visibility at the transition from generated intent into action.
